R v L – Junior Counsel in gangland murder by torture, manslaughter, kidnapping and preventing unlawful burial at Central Criminal Court.

R v V – One punch manslaughter. Defendant originally charged with murder.

R v S – Gang led robbery.

R v O – £12 million conspiracy at Heathrow to import 100 kilos of cocaine and 45 kilos of cannabis

R v C – Multi handed £1million Conspiracy to supply cannabis involving 10 defendants

R v H & A – Represented both defendants originally arrested for affray. Sole evidence consisted of 3 police officers on duty providing eye witness testimony – Judge dismissed the case after successful half time submission of no case to answer

R v S – Multi handed robbery. Crown offer no evidence after Defence submissions

R v W – Multi handed affray involving a family of 6 defendants.

R v K – Multi handed drug conspiracy featuring 8 defendants involved 1 ½ tonnes of shipment

R v O – Multi handed arson with intent to set fire to a school by 13 yr old youths

R v O – Practising Solicitor conveyancing fraud of £1.5 million

R v S – Multi handed Conspiracy benefit fraud involving 6 defendants. Successful submissions by Defence resulted in Crown offering no evidence on the conspiracy and defendant accepting simple offence of fraud and receiving non-custodial sentence

R-v- S – Defendant travelling on inbound flight from Chechnya – detained at Heathrow under Terrorism Act – without arrest. Subsequently released from custody following advice received from Defence

Mohammed Uddin

Mo is a leading defence advocate with particular expertise in high profile and complex cases, with a focus on privately funded clients; he has developed considerable experience defending in a multitude of specialist disciplines including Financial Conduct Authority prosecutions, cases initiated by the Office of the Attorney General, and also the Serious Fraud Office.

Mo has successfully represented a line of corporate clients and regularly receives instructions from professional clients, including those in the legal profession; he deals with cases in a wide range of courts and Tribunals, including Appellate courts.

Mo has co-defended clients before the European Court of Human Rights resisting allegations of contempt of court and improper disclosure by a Jury Foreman and a National Media Outlet.

More recently Mo was instructed to defend a Deputy Head of State of a foreign Government in proceedings described by the prosecution as the most serious case of its nature ever to come before the English courts.

Mo also Lectures in Criminal Litigation both in-house and externally.


Mariska van Leeuwen

Mariska van Leeuwen is a Crown Court advocate at MMA having joined in June 2016. Mariska qualified as a Solicitor in 1999 and as a Crown Court Advocate attaining Higher Rights of Audience in the Crown Courts in 2011.

Mariska is a member of the Complex Crime Unit Very High Cost Case Panel and acted as a key member of a small team for one of the principal Defendant’s charged with banking fraud spanning 8 years and involving multiple accounts set up in false identities through use of fraudulently obtained birth certificates and passports. Substantial and complex confiscation issues involving criminal property located in overseas jurisdictions and offshore accounts followed.

Specialising in Criminal Law (defence) since qualification, Mariska has worked on a wide variety of cases including murder, arson, armed robbery, violent crime and people trafficking cases. As Mariska has experienced both roles as solicitor and Crown Court Advocate she is experienced in handling large volumes of evidence including mobile phone data ; cell site; banking documentation and computer evidence.

As an Advocate regularly appearing in the Crown Court, Mariska has dealt with a range of cases including fraud, violent crime, dishonesty offences, firearms offences and both importation and supply of drugs cases.

Mariska has also been led as junior advocate in some complex and widely reported cases.

Notable Cases:

Guildford Crown Court – advocate in a six week trial for one of four Defendants charged with Fraud (Roofing fraud – Rogue Traders).

Guildford Crown Court – advocate for Defendant charged with fraud and money laundering offences.

Kingston Crown Court – advocate for one of the Defendants in Conspiracy to burgle commercial premises. This concerned surveillance and cell site evidence spanning three months. Negotiated pleas to a small number of substantive charges placing the Defendant in a lesser role and reducing the sentence.

Winchester Crown Court – advocate for Defendant charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving .The Defendant was driving his two work colleagues home along the M3 motorway after working a night shift. A collision with a lorry after the Defendant fell asleep at the wheel caused the death of one of his colleagues who was a back seat passenger. Guilty plea and sentenced to two years suspended sentence in what the Judge described as a tragic case,

Southwark Crown Court – Advocate for a youth charged with possession of a shotgun. The Crown alleged this had been used in an attempted murder. A firearms expert was instructed by the defence and a report served that resulted in the Crown offering no evidence.

Guildford Crown Court – led junior by leading Queens Counsel in a high profile, widely reported baby neglect case acting for the father at trial. This involved substantial, conflicting medical expert evidence regarding causation of injuries.

Winchester Crown Court – led junior in a seven week trial acting for one of nine Defendants charged with Conspiracy to supply class A drugs involving London gangs supplying drugs into Hampshire. This involved voluminous mobile telephone and cell site evidence.

Hove Crown Court – led junior in a nine week trial defending a key member of a gang that allegedly trafficked women into the UK for prostitution in an international people trafficking case.

Ed is an experienced trial advocate who regularly defends clients charged with the most serious criminal offences. He has appeared both as a leading and lead junior in serious and complex cases, and is regularly asked to advise on complex legal issues. His practice encompasses offences of every kind, but in particular he specialises in defending allegations of serious sexual offences and serious violence/homicide, in which he has enjoyed significant success over the years.

Ed is experienced in handling expert evidence including medical evidence/injury causation, mobile phone evidence, including cell-site, and computer evidence.

Ed joined Martin Murray and Associates in 2010, having previously worked from chambers in London. Outside of court he is an accredited police station representative and delivers training courses for other members of the firm.
